BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Pieter started learning piano at 7 - studying the classical syllabus - Trinity College, to Grade 7 before commencing Jazz studies at 17. He graduated with a B.Mus. (Jazz Piano) in 1999, and Dip. Teaching in 2000. In 2000 he was awarded a scholarship to London, UK - to study Jazz teaching and performance techniques with the Associated Board of Royal Schools. Here he attained ABRSM Dip. Jazz Teaching. Pieter is currently a member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers and a registered member with the NZ teachers council. He also holds a B.Sc (Psychology, Physiology) - achieved prior to his music studies.
PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE:
Since 1998 Pieter has worked extensively as pianist and keyboardist in both bigbands/large ensembles - as well as leading his own trios/quartets. This, along with his strong technique and knowledge of theory and improvisation; - has enabled him to develop a unique creative performance style. Pieter’s versatility and skill enables him to perform all styles of popular contemporary music: Popular, Rock n Roll to Jazz, or Blues/Funk, to Easy Listening and also Classical.
INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE:
Pieter’s international experience includes numerous contract hotel residencies (Hyatt, Sheraton & Shilla Hotels; in Korea, Argentina, Japan) & also extensive cruise ship employment (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Lines). This diverse experience enabled him to develop both, - the versatility of a session musician, performing in bigbands; - to creatively leading his own Jazz Trio (2003-2006 – “The Mantaray Trio”). More recently Pieter has developed his own act as a piano/vocal entertainer. In this genre, he undertook numerous contracts in South Korea performing for Hyatt Hotels in Seoul, Busan & Jeju Island (2011-2015). In 2015 Pieter performed 8 months with 6 Star Regent Cruises - World Cruise.
